Position Description: Program Director
Reports to: Executive Director (ED)
Who We Are
SMGW is a non-profit organization committed to empowering program
participants to realize significant and positive life changes
through the Next Step program. The heart of Next Step is
casework/coaching, STRIVE employment readiness training, and Adult
Basic Education (ABE). Program team members partner with
participants to set goals and remove barriers to achieve them -
largely but not exclusively in the areas of employment, housing,
health, and education. For 38 years, SMGW is proud to have had a
diverse team comprised of full-time paid staff and part-time
volunteers who are as committed to change-work with individual
participants as they are to community change-work through
deliberate collective action to end systemic racism and achieve
socio-economic and racial equity for all. While we are faith-based,
we have no religious requirements for program participation or
employment.
Position Summary
The Program Director (PD) oversees all components of Next Step.
This person ensures delivery of quality program services and
positive participant outcomes across sites; leads program data
collection, analysis, and reporting with assistance from the
Program Coordinator (PC); creates new partnerships and expands
others in collaboration with the management team; and, increases
participant service utilization. The PD supervises the PC, who
shares oversight of Lead Caseworkers. The PD exclusively supervises
the STRIVE team (STRIVE Trainer, Employer Specialist, SWC
Caseworker), and Adult Basic Education (ABE) team at Congress
Heights, SE DC.
The PD is a member of the Management Team, along with the
Development Director, the COO, and the ED. S/he co-leads Program
Committee with the Committee Chair. The PD participates in Board
Meetings and key organizational functions for donors and
leadership. The position requires ongoing collaboration with the
Volunteer Manager on volunteer engagement and training. PD
collaborates with ED on strategic initiatives. The PD and the ED
are principal contacts for our affiliation with STRIVE
National.
Responsibilities
Program Oversight
Provides oversight of program operations, staffing, and initiatives
across multiple sites. Ensures adequate staffing, robust
programming, and maximum utilization of services.
Oversees execution of and reporting for all SMGW local and federal
program grants, e.g., Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA),
DC Department of Employment Services (DOES).
Gathers, prepares, analyzes, and interprets program data. Leads
conversations with Salesforce vendor(s) to troubleshoot operational
and reporting issues, with support from Program Coordinator.
Creates a quality assurance system to ensure that data for all
participants is entered both accurately and timely. This includes
ensuring that the data for STRIVE participants is accurately and
regularly transmitted to STRIVE National.
Submits utilization and outcomes reports. Present findings,
insights., and proposed solutions at Management Team meetings,
Program Committee meetings, Board Meetings, and, as requested, for
funding proposals and at major donor events.
Maintains standards and procedures for effective casework and
training. Performs periodic audits of case notes to assure
compliance with program standards, inform future. programming, and
identify staff training needs.
Staff Leadership & Supervision
Supervises Team Leaders at Samaritan sites, as well as the PC.
Creates opportunities for staff professional development in
partnership with the PC.
Conducts performance reviews for all Program team members in
consultation with Team Leaders and the PC. Reviews performance
reviews conducted by the PC. Recommends raises and promotions, and
performance improvement plans where needed, in consultation with
the ED and PC (where applicable).
Develops a schedule and agendas for regular team meetings.
Identifies opportunities for team building, data feedback,
strategizing and problem-solving.
Co-leads efforts to recruit, hire, and onboards additional program
staff. Co-designs and leads team member onboarding with support
from ED and the Program Team.
In partnership with the Volunteer Manager, interviews, and onboards
new program volunteers, identifies new volunteer opportunities and
develops annual volunteer training calendar for all program
volunteers.
Partnership Creation and Sustainability
Cultivates new partnerships to develop referral pipelines, creates
training opportunities, and strategically cultivates SMGW's
presence and engagement in the community.
Sustains and/or expands current partnerships, maximizing
opportunities for cross-training and referrals.
Represents SMGW at various DMV events, e.g., Coalition for
Non-Profit Housing & Economic Development (CNHED) meetings, to
expand SMGW's influence and presence, and to stay abreast of trends
/developments/best practices in the workforce development, housing,
and social services arenas.
Qualifications & Requirements
At least 5 years of supervisory experience in one location managing
nonprofit program(s) where case management and employment training
are central, and the organization's budget is $1 million+.
At least 2 years of supervisory experience of middle manager(s)
At least 3 years of direct case management experience working with
adult clientele.
An MSW or the equivalent is a requirement for this role, given its
clinical demands.
At least 3 years overseeing employment training/workforce
development programming, in terms of both 1-1 individual training
and training classes.
A portfolio of active relationships with similar community-based
service providers including governmental providers in the the
Greater Washington area.
Ability to understand and explain how structural racism has created
and sustained inequity in housing, employment, and medical
treatment for persons in the DMV area and use this knowledge to
inform programming.
Competence with data collection, analysis, and reporting; knowledge
of Salesforce platforms is a plus.
Proven analytical, planning, and implementation skills, as well as
clear written expression.
Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook/Word/Excel.
Ability to travel to multiple sites within the metro area and
attend occasional evening events.
Salary: Starting salary range is $80,000 - $100,000.
